******Sometime during the afternoon, SI basement******

Polygirl was nervous. She had finished her coding and was watching the terminal as it updated on the progress of the upload.  Next to the computer was a disembodied android head with closed eyes, the final step in months of work, even for Poly.  After a minute the terminal signaled the download was complete. The engineer looked expectantly at the head, waiting for the eyes to open as the onboard computers activated.  When they didn’t open right away, she started to check the unit the head was currently attached to for any kind of status update.

“Program uploaded, processing 80 percent complete.”  Suddenly the head started to speak as the eyes snapped open, scaring Polygirl and causing her to jump backwards, falling on her butt.  “90 percent processed… Processing complete. Hello?”  The head started to blink its eyes like it had come out of a trance.  “I’m sorry, I seem to be stuck.  Can I get some help please?”

Polygirl climbed back up onto her chair as she looked at the android head.  “Yeah, hi. What’s your status?”  She asked as she steadied herself again with two hands while calling up a status update on the terminal with her other two hands.

“My battery is fully charged, my optics are operating within normal parameters, and my vocal unit is operating within tolerance.  I believe the correct phrase is ‘I am fine’. Is that correct?”  The head looked towards Poly with a focused look at first, softening it slightly when the question came up.

“That sounds right.”  Polygirl replied as she pulled up the field of vision on her screen to adjust it if she needed to. When it turned out that she didn’t need to, she smiled.  “Okay, now that you’ve been uploaded, it’s time to run some tests.”

******30 minutes later******

The android was plugging a second left arm to the torso before starting to test its body out.  Currently there was one head with shoulder length brown hair, one torso, four arms with the second pair below the first, and four legs with the second pair behind the ‘main’ pair.  As each limb started to go through a range of motions, Polygirl came up with a tablet in two hands, a stylus in another hand, and her last hand in a pocket.  “How do you feel now?”

“Better. It’s good to be connected to a body so I can move around.  Also, I have come up with something.”  The android responded as the test moved from the arms to the legs.

“What’s that?”

“A name for myself. According to the information you supplied me, humanoid life forms have names.”  The android looked at Poly before continuing.  “I have decided to call myself Catherine Priscilla Underwood.  Now, should I call you mom or mother since you did create me?”  She confidently said as she finished the test and went to put on the boots that were made available for her.

Poly’s eyes were wide at the announcement.  “That…is a very long and formal name.”

“Yes, but the sense of humor you gave me is still there.”

Poly stood there, looking confused for a moment before it clicked and she started laughing.  “I see what you mean.”  She blurted out between fits of laughter as she found a stool to sit down and compose herself.  “That is pretty good.  What do you say to testing your systems out by going around and helping me out?”

“That would be acceptable. Where shall we go first, mother?”  The android replied with a totally straight face.

“Ummmm…over that way, and we can figure out what you should call me on the way over.”  Poly answered as she pointed towards a large bay door.

******5 minutes later, in a large robotics lab******

“This is one of your current projects?”  CPU looked on in shock at the plans on the screen as construction proceeded normally.

“Yeah, I had some new ideas on how to upgrade him, and since I’m on version 2.9.333 already, I thought it was time for a whole new direction.”  Polygirl replied as she noticed a light on the console.  “Turn up you hearing and tremor sensors please.”

CPU was confused but complied with the request anyway, realizing why after she did so.  Second later, a man in a full motorcycle helmet, leather jacket, jeans, and riding boots walked up. “What’s all the hubbub, bubs?”

“Your next.”  Polygirl replied as she pointed at the monstrosity being built in the bay itself.

“Damn. At this rate, people are going to think I told you I wanted to compensate for something.  I don’t think that counts as armor anymore, ya know, in case you accidentally inhaled too much…everything you got in the chemistry lab ya got here.”  The helmeted figure said upon looking in the bay, then at the nearby computer screen.  “Did the boss want an ‘only strike’ option this time around?”

“He did want a lot of advances made; this was the only way I could do them…right now.”  Polygirl blushed as she answered.  “Oh hey, this will be done in a few days and I’ll need you to test it.  Space has already been reserved in North Dakota for us.”

The helmet turned to face Poly.  “North Dakota?  Why there?”

“Fewer people to report the UFO for the flight trials.”

“That makes sense, but two final questions.  When do we leave and how’s the android doing so far?”  He asked, pointing to the now surprised assistant.

Polygirl looked at him, surprised as well.  “How did you know?”

“You left the plans on a terminal one night, especially for her current configuration.”  He explained as she looked on.  “Anyway, I gotta bounce. See you guys later.”  As he said the last line, he turned and started to jog out of the lab.

“He is perceptive, isn’t he?”  CPU asked the tech as she watched him leave.

“I think the armor’s HUD has helped him notice more.  Anyway, think you can help me with some of the programming?”

******The following day, 8:30AM******

CPU and Polygirl were getting situated in the chairs in the CEO’s office, waiting for him to come in. They were told by his secretary that he went to go do one thing really quick before he would talk to them.  CPU had two heads, four arms, and two legs today and had on a jumpsuit similar to what Polygirl usually wears.  While the android was sitting there calmly, Polygirl looked nervous. She was about to say something when the doors opened and The Lone Stranger came in.  “Sorry for the delay, but I had to stop by the cafeteria. They had a special surprise for you, Poly, that I took you away from.”  He had a box of food in his hands that he put down in front of Poly before going around to his chair behind the desk.  “So Poly, have you been able to complete the analysis of the debris from our break in a while back?”

CPU handed Polygirl a tablet as she took out two more and started to look stuff up on them as the head tech answered.  “Umm, they were spider shaped robots; at least I’m pretty sure they were spider shaped.  I also noticed the damage done to the security system was very precise, like they knew where to cut the wires to knock out the various sensors and cameras.”

The Lone Stranger leaned back in his chair as Polygirl opened the box to find a breakfast that looked like it included foods from at least eight different countries.  As she happily dug in, he spoke again.  “Almost sounds like Kim Paler.  I wonder if it would be possible to create little scorpion looking robots as part of our enhanced security measures.”

Polygirl ran through a couple commands on the tablet she still had with her before handing it to the android who took it in a free hand.  “She does have some designs for scorpion robots already. The prototypes have already been built and they will need some adjustments before they are fully ready to go.”  CPU spoke with her right head while her left head was looking over one of the other tablets, seemingly trying to find another file.

“What about the new security measures that were mentioned last week?”  The man behind the desk asked.

CPU’s left head spoke this time.  “The technology survey can be started next week, and there are a couple of choices for how we can distribute beacons to everyone.”  She stated plainly as the right head went back to looking for files on the other tablet she brought in.

“And security systems?”

“She has plans in place for a secondary security system that will run parallel to the existing security system, all scanning in non-standard ways.” CPU’s right head responded again looking over the files.

“Sounds good. What about your system checks so far?”

“I have tested out three bodies and four configurations so far.  I believe my flight body is scheduled to be tested soon.”  She responded as she looked over the schedule for the next few days.  “In fact, we are scheduled to leave around 1PM this afternoon.”

Polygirl looked up from her now empty food container after finishing off the bottle of orange juice that was brought up as well.  “Oh, that’s right. I got a bunch of stuff I have to do today before we can leave for the tests.”  She said as she bolted up out of her chair, looking at the CEO.

“Go on then, Poly. Just keep me updated.”  He responded, pressing a button on his desk to open the doors.

“I will. I need to stop by and tell the cafeteria staff thank you for the food too.”  Polygirl said as she jogged out of the office. CPU followed along behind her, waving to the CEO with one hand while the other three hands were holding the tablets she brought along with her.

******3 days later, 2PM, isolated North Dakota airspace******

“That’s perfect, Catherine. It looks like your flight systems are perfect.”  Poly’s voice came through the comlink clear as day as the android hovered over the monitoring station in a sealed bodysuit with large mechanical wings attached to the back. She had two arms, two legs with jet exhaust coming out of the feet at the heel and just behind where the toes would be on a human foot, and a helmet on her head with a clear faceplate that had some data scrolling across it.

“Confirmed. My flight systems are operating within expected parameters.  And I have decided to reverse one of my previous decisions; I will allow you to call me Cathy.”  She responded while processing the recorded telemetry of her tests.

“Yay, thank you.  Next up we should work on a more evasive program in case you were to encounter combat conditions in that body.”  Polygirl was happy to hear the change in attitude as she was getting the next stage of the tests ready to go.

“How will you test my flight systems under combat conditions?”  CPU asked as she watched the command center.

“Oh come on, I fly out here of all places to test out how the new suit operates and you think I’m not gonna get involved?”  A male voice broke into the communications channel between the inventor and invention.

“Hello Warbuster. You will be my opponent for the combat simulation, I take it?”  CPU responded dryly.

“The man was right, no respect at all.  Yeah, I just finished getting used to the new suit, if it can still be called a suit, and now it’s time to see if the targeting computer can aim straight.  Don’t worry, it’ll all be virtual ammo I’m firing right now; the full weapon tests will be later on.”

“Very well. How long will you need to get ready to begin this phase of our testing?”  CPU directed the question to Warbuster before she registered an energy surge below her and the display showed a missile lock on her, forcing her to move.

“Oh, I think I can get ready pretty soon.”  Warbuster’s reply came as he started to warm up his targeting systems to give the android a run for her money.

******3 days later, Grand Forks AFB******

The military transport plane was being loaded with one massive crate as well as three smaller crates while Polygirl and CPU watched the process. Just then, a sedan from the motor pool pulled up.  After it stopped, the back door opened and a man got out wearing a brown suit under a coat, a black hair wig, and a Guy Fawkes mask. He acknowledged the personnel that were hoping to catch a glimpse of the pilot before he and his armor were loaded on the plane.  When they saw his face covered, they started to boo as he waved.  “Yes, come on guys. Do you really think I’d let anyone see who I was?  Oh well. How’s the loading going, Poly?”

“Oh, hi. Things are going slowly but I knew that would happen.”  Poly responded while watching the largest crate get loaded onto the plane.  “We should be ready to leave in about an hour.”

“Alright. Hey Cathy, hope you’re not still mad at me for winning.  I have to admit I never saw an android brood before.”  Warbuster’s pilot went over and put a hand on CPU’s shoulder.

“I did not brood, and you cheated.”  CPU didn’t move an inch except to speak; even the air force personnel that were within earshot could tell she was mad.

“Get used to the fact that the bad guys will cheat like crazy.  If you’re not gonna cheat back, you should at least try to adapt so you won’t get suckered as often.”

CPU looked at him and was about to chew him out when she stopped and thought about what he just said.  “I see your point; I will endeavor to adapt my programming to compensate.”  She continued looking at him for a moment before speaking again.  “How are you getting used to your new HUD layout?”

The man behind the mask thought for a moment as they both started to walk to one of the nearby hangars.  “It’s good so far. I will say Poly does good work on coming up with clean interfaces for other people.”

CPU nodded in agreement as they walked.  “I have noticed the interface she has for herself is what most beings would consider jumbled and chaotic.  However, her circumstance allows her to absorb information in a way that is very nonstandard.”  Warbuster’s pilot nodded in agreement as he got the door for her as they went inside to wait for the plane to be loaded.

******The following week, Monday 5:15PM******

CPU was watching a small scorpion-shaped robot taking a few tentative steps forward before the legs gave way and the robot landed on its metal belly.  Once it stopped moving, she looked at the screen of the computer it was hooked up to so she could determine the problem.  “Hmm, the hydraulics keep losing pressure.”  She had one head, two arms, and had detached her hips and legs, opting for a recharging chair to recharge her current body’s batteries.  She looked over to the other side of the table where Polygirl was, but caught herself before speaking since her creator was passed out face down on the table.  “She did spend all weekend working on the new security system.”  She said more to the robot scorpion than anyone else before typing in a command to summon her legs and an extra pair of arms to carry Polygirl to a more comfortable place to sleep.

******Tuesday, 9:30AM******

Polygirl walked into her lab with food from the cafeteria as she saw CPU walking around the lab completely naked.  Paulina blushes as she quickly closes and locks the lab.  “You should put some clothes on that body, you know?”  She said sheepishly.

“My apologies. I noticed you had finished this body and I wanted to test it out.”  CPU replied as Polygirl handed her a lab coat to put on.  “I did notice that this body was created with skin instead of the default outfits that the other bodies were constructed with. Why is that?”

Polygirl went to one of the terminals to pull up a list of tasks for today as she answered.  “In that body you can pass yourself off as more of a regular person.  You would be able to eat and drink in that body and the skin can even heal itself if it gets damaged.”

“Fascinating. What happens to the skin when I open ports to add limbs?”  The android woman asked after putting on the lab coat and making her way to a separate terminal to look for clothing for this body in inventory.

“I’ve had a chance to work with nanites a lot. I‘ve worked some small canisters into your body and limbs to rebuild the skin that does separate when you swap out limbs.”

CPU nodded as she found what she was looking for in the computer.  “We will have to discuss this more over breakfast, as well as why I have additional ports for breasts on this body.  I will return in five minutes after I get properly dressed.”  As she spoke, she started to move towards the storeroom as Poly blushed again at her discovery.

To be continued…
Look at this, I've done some of that there fancy writin again recently...

As you may have seen I came up with an android character kinda recently so I thought I should write about the character and give you a hint of what she can do.  Of course this one is done in two parts and you get to see her interact with Warbuster a bit too...it's amazing he didn't break her a bit.

Another day, another new character for :iconangel-fallsda:

The old business can't wait for part 2:

Yup, always keeping Poly busy.  Otherwise she might start animating her action figures.

Poly explaining anatomy/biology to an android?  I'm sure that is going to involve a lot of blushing
